Our society chooses what is important and then creates the institutions that perpetuate those values. Through the process of creating The Perfect Flower show in 2008, I thought deeply about beauty, colors, scents, and attraction. My conclusion was that nature wastes no energy. If beauty, color, scent, and attraction were not important, nature wouldn’t waste energy on them. If the fittest could survive without these elements, they would be in greater numbers because they would be more efficient and have more energy for hunting, gathering, and processing food.
Our medical system has decided that scent, attraction, and unconscious compatibility aren’t important. We have sperm banks and egg adoption systems that don’t include any processes for evaluating scent. There is a photo and a bio, but what about all those other indicators that may have more influence on genetic compatibility than looks and a resume? In the donor systems, the powers that be have decided that legally and personally it is cleaner if no one ever meets. It is less emotionally taxing and complicated.
What if you were given a worn t-shirt from the man who donated the sperm so you could smell him? What if you were allowed to meet the egg donor to see if you feel drawn to her? That could be a useful indicator of whether your sperm and her egg would collaborate well in generating a human.
Psychedelics help you see outside the Matrix. You can see what is a human construct and what is nature’s tendency. Nature is practical. Nature is clear. Nature is efficient. If it doesn’t make sense, it will evolve out of the population. Human constructs are amazing for a nascent species that is just beginning to understand what is happening around them. Our work is to look to nature for cues rather than thinking we can even compete with its wisdom.
