What’s It Good For?

Compounds and the creative problems they are good for.

People often assume that because I use psychedelics for my creative process and teach others how to use them as well, I am a fan of marijuana and alcohol. I’m not. Every compound has a very different profile and many are not my allies. I barely drink alcohol as I am prone to migraines. I don’t take THC products as they bum me out.

I recommend learning what your ally is.

In this post, I will share some of my favorite compounds and what creative problems they are especially good for, in my experience of directing over 300 artists through creative processes that rendered real creative output and guiding over 200 people through creative psychedelic experiences.

I am not preoccupied with what people produce. I am obsessed with the creative process and helping people achieve flow. Once they are in flow, what they come away with can be almost anything. I deliver the experience that will most likely render results - whatever those are.

Psilocybin - Magic mushrooms are existential. They are best at considering birth, death, connection to Earth, the arc of life, a global perspective on experiences, legacy, and becoming interwoven into the fabric of nature. This compound longs for untouched nature. This compound reveals the human animal. This compound holds a mirror up to your ego and exposes it with little spin. You can walk away so deeply in love with this Earth that you wonder how you could have missed it all these years. On the physical plane, it awakens circulation and deep embodiment - the rush of blood through veins. Pleasure.

LSD - LSD is intricate and detailed. In our everyday lives, most of us can focus on a creative problem for a few hours - maybe four if you are good. LSD allows us to stay with a problem for 8-10 hours, and it helps you visualize it in great detail. LSD will help you hold many details in your mind at once. On the physical plane, LSD is a performance enhancer as well. Your body can keep going without pain or exhaustion for much longer. Recently, my good friend and I skied 36 miles in four hours on a half tab of LSD. I felt no fatigue at all. I am in decent shape, but not like that.

MDMA - MDMA is relational. It is most effective in healing and deepening the relationship to self, partners, and community. It offers vulnerability without fear. Without fear, we realize that we can take much greater personal risks, yet they don’t feel risky. We feel that we are sharing our truth and that truth has dignity regardless of how it is received. This temporary superpower allows us to process dark, deep, or intense emotions. MDMA is best for solving problems of the heart or designing work from the heart. On the physical plane, MDMA is made for kissing. You can fall into a vortex of touch.

Ketamine - Ketamine is for honesty. It feels like a truth serum - being in flow and sharing because you completely lack self-consciousness. This also makes it great for dancing and connecting with friends and oneself. It helps you solve those problems that are just under the surface - things you haven’t been able to see because you are in denial in some way. Ketamine helps you locate the obvious answers that you have been missing. The dissociative properties can also help you escape anxiety patterns for a while. On the physical plane, it makes me feel like the bionic man, placing me on an alternate plane of sound and motion. This can open up new pathways in movement and music.
